Ready-made plans
Day plans and multi-day routes, with the order already worked out.
- Hanbok, Palaces & Bukchon AlleysGyeongbokgung and Jongmyo close Tuesdays; Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung and Deoksugung close Mondays — which palaces you can see depends on the day. If a closing day lands on a public holiday they open and rest the next weekday instead. Ticket sales stop an hour before closing — in winter (Nov-Feb) Gyeongbokgung's real cutoff is 16:00. Hanbok (jeogori + skirt or trousers) gets you into the four palaces and Jongmyo free, foreigners included (Secret Garden excluded). Bukchon's red zone (the Bukchon-ro 11-gil lane) is open to visitors 10:00-17:00 only, daily — outside those hours photos can draw a fine up to 100,000 won (main streets and cafes are unrestricted).
- Gwangjang Market to Cheonggyecheon and DDP by NightGwangjang Market is calmer in the morning, before the lunch rush. Some stalls are still cash-only. The Cheonggyecheon walkway is closed entirely during heavy rain. Street stalls are often cash-only, and topping up T-money at a convenience store takes cash only. It's a night course — check your last train first; weekend last trains run 30-60 minutes earlier than weekdays.
- Yeonnam Forest Path & Hongdae BuskingThe safest solo walk in Seoul for a foreigner — a straight line with six subway stations sitting right on it, so you can bail out anywhere. No stairs. Midsummer afternoons lack shade; after sunset is better.
- Seongsu Cafes, Seoul Forest & the Han RiverFlat the whole way — no climbing. Popular Seongsu cafés run 30+ minute waits on weekends. The Han River wind is fierce in winter. Popular cafes take remote waitlists in the app that morning — if you're late, the takeaway line moves 4-6x faster (Catch Table Global signs up without a Korean number). Ttukseom pool opens for just over two months in summer (2026: 19 Jun-30 Aug).
- Banpo Han River & the Moonlight Rainbow FountainThe fountain runs 15 March to October only. Mon-Thu at 20:00, 20:30 and 21:00; Fri-Sun and holidays add a 19:30 show (plus 21:30 in Jul-Aug); each show lasts 20 minutes. It's cancelled same-day for rain in the forecast, strong wind or murky water — check hangang.seoul.go.kr before leaving (the "noon show" in English guides no longer exists). It's a 20-minute walk from the station, so agree to meet at Express Bus Terminal Exit 8-1.
- Myeongdong Street Food & Namsan Night ViewThe free Namsan Oreumi elevator at Myeongdong Station Exit 4 skips the first steep climb. If it gets hard, switch to the 01 circular bus (transit-card transfers work). The observatory itself costs extra. The observatory stops entry 30 minutes before closing. In Mar-May fine dust can erase the view — check airkorea.or.kr/eng before buying a ticket; at night the tower's light colour is the air-quality reading (blue = good, red = very bad).
- Itaewon World Food & MuseumsThe rainy-day fallback. The National Museum of Korea opens on Mondays too (09:30-17:30, till 21:00 Wed & Sat, last entry 30 min before closing, permanent exhibits free) — the most reliable wet-weather plan. Note the galleries close on the first Monday of Mar/Jun/Sep/Dec (2026: 6/1, 9/7, 12/7). Check Leeum's closing days separately. Also one of the few areas where Muslim students can reliably find a meal.
- Free Gangnam: Starfield Library & BongeunsaGangnam on almost no money. Starfield Library sits inside COEX Mall so weather doesn't matter, and Bongeunsa is straight across the road — barely any travel between stops. On Wednesdays many public museums nearby run free or late openings — check that day's notices.
- Inwangsan City Wall & Tongin MarketFollow the fortress wall and it's hard to get lost. There's a short hands-on rock section near the summit — skip it right after rain or snow, and wear proper shoes. Obey the no-photography signs near the military area. The Tongin Market coin-lunchbox cafe closes Tuesdays and the third Sunday of each month; weekdays 11:00-16:00 (coin sales end 15:00), weekends to 17:00 (coins to 16:00). Gyeongbokgung also closes Tuesdays — avoid this course on a Tuesday.
- Haneul Park Silver Grass & Oil Tank Culture ParkThe silver grass peaks in October. There's a long stair climb to the top (a paid shuttle is an alternative), and the riverside stretch has almost no shade in midsummer. In late autumn and winter the sun sets early (about 17:15 in December) — see the silver grass before dark.
