What Ewha is like

Things Korean students all know that are new when you arrive.

1886

Founded by an American missionary

Mary F. Scranton of the Methodist Episcopal Church founded Ewha Haktang on 31 May 1886. King Gojong gave the school its name in 1887, and the college course began in September 1910.

1946

The first approved university

Ewha was given permission to open as a university on 15 August 1946, and it says it was the first university the Ministry of Education approved.

배꽃

A pear blossom emblem

The emblem was first adopted in 1930. It shows a pear blossom with five petals. Two circles inside stand for God's revelation, and a cross stands for the Christian spirit Ewha was founded on.

진선미

Truth, goodness, beauty

Jin, Seon and Mi is Ewha's motto. The school says the open gate and the narrow path under it in the emblem show how hard these ideals are to reach.

1935

Pfeiffer Hall and the Sinchon campus

Ewha moved to its Sinchon campus in 1935. Seven buildings went up in 1935 and 1936, beginning with Pfeiffer Hall, and Appenzeller Hall was built as its twin.

  6. Plan to arrive in the last week of February. Move-in, orientation and course registration all happen in late February.

Ewha's credit Korean courses for degree students aren't open to exchange students. Ask the International Exchange Affairs Team (goabroad@ewha.ac.kr) which Korean classes you can take.
Attendance
A semester is 15 weeks. Miss a third of the classes and you fail the course. Some courses set stricter rules, so check the syllabus. For an excused absence, bring documents and tell your instructor yourself.
Grades
Out of 4.3, so an A+ is 4.3 and an F is 0. Pass/fail courses don't count toward your GPA. Spring transcripts are emailed to you and your home university at the end of July, once your fees, dorm key and library books are cleared. For extra copies, email service@ewha.ac.kr and pay by wire first.
