A night school first
Gwanseo College was founded in 1955 and the Chungam Foundation in 1962. In 1963 Wonju University was approved as a four-year night school.

University status
The school was upgraded to a university in 1989. Its Korean medicine hospital opened in 1992.
Joining Sangji Youngseo College
The merger with Sangji Youngseo College was approved in January 2019, and the merged Sangji University began in March 2020.
An S and a J
The emblem is drawn from the letters S and J, in green and blue. Sangji describes the colours as clear and clean.
Chiaksan in Wonju
Chiaksan National Park spans Wonju, Hoengseong and Yeongwol. Its highest peak, Birobong, is 1,288 m, and Sangji's Wonju guide says it is popular with hikers in autumn.

- The KTX from Cheongnyangni takes about 50 minutes to Wonju Station or Manjong Station.
- From Seoul by bus
- Buses from Dong Seoul Terminal take about 1 hour 15 minutes to Wonju bus terminal, and from the Express Bus Terminal in Gangnam about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- From Wonju bus terminal
- Take bus 4, 16-1 or 30 from in front of the terminal, or 13 from across the road, to the Usan Elementary School stop, about 30 minutes. A taxi takes about 10 minutes.
- From Wonju Station
- Take bus 30, 34-1 or 90 to the Usan Elementary School stop, 40 to 60 minutes. A taxi takes about 15 minutes.
- Shuttle bus
- SJU runs its own commuter buses.

SJU doesn't post its exchange application online. Your exchange coordinator at home has the forms and deadlines.

After you arrive
Residence card
You need the card to open a phone contract in your own name, open a bank account and sign up for most Korean apps. The international office has a desk for visas and stays.

- Fee
- The government fee for the card is ₩35,000.
- Trips abroad
- Don't travel to other countries until your card is out. A single-entry visa works only once, so leaving early can stop you from coming back on it.
- Changes
- Report a new address within 15 days of moving, at your local community centre or at immigration. Report a new passport to immigration within 15 days as well. Both are free.
- Immigration helpline
- Call 1345 with visa or residence card questions. It answers in English and other languages on weekdays from 9:00 to 22:00. From abroad, dial +82-2-1345.

Housing
SJU has three dorms on campus with room for 1,763 students. They hold an orientation after you move in.

- A men's dorm with rooms for two and shared showers and toilets.
- Malgeum Hall
- For men and women, with rooms for two and shared showers and toilets.
- Happy Dormitory
- Rooms for two, each with its own shower and toilet. There's a lounge, a reading room, a shared kitchen, a gym, a convenience store and a café.
- Cafeteria
- The student cafeteria in Minju Hall serves from 9:00 to 11:00, 11:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 18:30.
