What CNU is like

Things Korean students all know that are new when you arrive.

1952

Three colleges in 1952

It opened as Chungnam Provincial University with colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Engineering. It took the name Chungnam National University in 1963.

대덕

Moving to Daedeok

Parts of the university began moving to Daedeok on 1 July 1970, starting with the administration building, the graduate school and the economics and law colleges. Agriculture moved in 1972 and 1975.

백마

The white horse

The white horse is CNU's symbolic animal. The school colour is navy blue, used with teal in the university's logo.

대동제

Baekma Daedongje

The big festival is Baekma Daedongje, held in autumn. In 2026 it was set for 29 and 30 September, with the main stage on the ROTC field.

막동

The lawn called Makdong

Makgeolli-Dongsan, known as Makdong, is a grassy lawn where students sit on mats with friends. The student newspaper says most students have been there at least once.

  1. Last spring your home university nominated you by 20 November, and you applied by 1 December on a Google form. CNU sends the new link to nominees every semester.

  2. There's no GPA requirement, and you don't need a language test if you only take courses in English. For courses in Korean, CNU prefers TOPIK level 3 or higher.

  3. With the form: a certificate of enrolment in English, a passport valid for your whole stay, a 35 × 45 mm photo and your transcripts in English. Later you post a bank statement showing US$4,000 for one semester or US$8,600 for a year, and a stamped certificate of enrolment. Outside the OECD it needs an apostille or consular confirmation. Admission letters went out at the end of December.

  4. Send a health certificate with a TB test, your arrival details and the participation agreement.

  5. Exchange students come on a D-2-6 visa.
