From 1969 to today's name
The school opened on 21 March 1969 and became Changwon University on 1 March 1991. On 16 November 2023 the name changed to National Changwon University.

CWNU was founded in 1969 and says it is the only national university in Changwon. It says it has supported the growth of the Changwon National Industrial Complex, one of Korea's main machinery hubs. The campus is in Uichang-gu, and exchange students live in the dorms on campus.

For spring 2027 your home university nominates you by 31 October 2026. Then you apply online on Study in Korea by 30 November 2026. CWNU sends the link to your exchange coordinator.
Full-time students nominated by a CWNU partner. There's no language requirement, but good Korean or English is strongly recommended.
A photo, a passport copy, a study plan, your official transcript, a letter of recommendation, a certificate of enrolment and the dorm application. The forms are on the application website.
The certificate of admission goes to your home university 15 to 20 days after the application deadline. You need a D-2-6 visa.
After you arrive
Residence card
You need the card to open a phone contract in your own name, open a bank account and sign up for most Korean apps.

- Health insurance
- You join National Health Insurance automatically once you get your card. Keep your travel insurance from home until then.
- Fee
- The government fee for the card is ₩35,000.
- Trips abroad
- Don't travel to other countries until your card is out. A single-entry visa works only once, so leaving early can stop you from coming back on it.
- Changes
- Report a new address within 15 days of moving, at your local community centre or at immigration. Report a new passport to immigration within 15 days as well. Both are free.
- Immigration helpline
- Call 1345 with visa or residence card questions. It answers in English and other languages on weekdays from 9:00 to 22:00. From abroad, dial +82-2-1345.

- Rooms
- Double rooms with their own bathroom. Building 4 (women) is apartment style, three rooms around a living room.
- Meals
- ₩156,000 for about one meal every other weekday, up to ₩744,000 for three meals every weekday.
- Bills
- Buildings 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 take a utility deposit and charge for what you use beyond it.
- Moving in
- Bring a TB health certificate from the last month to get your key card.
- Bring
- Bedding, toiletries and a LAN cable. Heaters, kettles, fridges, electric blankets and e-scooters aren't allowed.
Before you apply
- You must live on campus. Every exchange student lives in the dorms.
- Out on the spot. Theft, violence, starting a fire and entering a room of the other sex mean you leave the dorm. Drinking and bringing guests to stay cost penalty points.

- Courses are mostly in Korean, with a few for exchange students. The course list is in Korean only.
- How much
- At least 6 and at most 21 credits a semester. Most courses are 3 credits, and exchange students usually take 3 to 6. Grades are out of 4.5.
- Transcript
- CWNU sends you one copy. Ask the International Office before grades come out if you need more.
- Korean Language Center
- You can join its Korean classes at a discounted ₩800,000, paid to CWNU. That was the 2024 price.
