Hwangnyongsa Temple Site
황룡사지
Landmark · Gyeongju
The Hwangnyongsa History and Culture Center is closed for a new exhibition until 20 November. The temple site is open.

A nine-story wooden pagoda stood here, about 80 m tall. Work began in 643 under Queen Seondeok and finished in 645. It burned in the Mongol invasion of 1238. Only the foundation stones remain. A one-tenth scale model sits in the history center right beside the site. That building is closed for a gallery refit from 1 July to 20 November 2026. Until it reopens, the closest stand-in is Gyeongju Tower at the Expo Park. In September 2026 the temple site itself was also fenced off for repair work.
