East Jeju Without a Car: Sunrise Peak, the Udo Ferry, and a Night Market
첫차로 성산일출봉, 배 타고 우도 한 바퀴 — 차 없이 도는 제주 동부 하루
Day course · 6 stops · Jeju
Two things break this day: whether it's a Monday, and whether the boat sails. Settle both before you read anything else. MONDAYS. Sunrise Peak (Seongsan Ilchulbong) closes the FIRST Monday of every month — the next day instead if that Monday is a public holiday. The Haenyeo Museum closes EVERY Monday. The app's spot data does not record closing days, so it will happily hand you this course on a Monday: check the date yourself. - Ordinary Monday: swap the museum for Gimnyeong Beach. It's free, there is no closing time and no ticket cutoff, and it's a short walk from the 201 bus stop. Budget for the distance, though — Gimnyeong is about 65 minutes from Seongsan Ilchulbong Entrance on the 201, well past Sehwa (35-40 min). Gimnyeong is also closer to Jeju City than Woljeongri, so watch the sunset there and head straight back rather than doubling back east. - Manjanggul Cave is conditional. Only attempt it if you leave Seongsan before 14:45; later than that you miss the ticket cutoff. Hours 09:00-18:00, last admission 17:00, 4,000 won, reopened 30 May 2026, closed the first WEDNESDAY of the month — so Mondays are fine. Getting there means changing to bus 711-1 or 711-2 at the Gimnyeong transfer stop, and those run rarely; if it doesn't line up it's a 2.5 km walk (30-35 min) to the cave entrance. Standing outside a closed ticket window at 17:00 is the worst outcome this day has, so if it's marginal, go to Gimnyeong Beach instead. - First Monday: replace Sunrise Peak with Gwangchigi Beach (free, 15 min walk from the peak) — worth it at low tide, when the moss-covered lava is exposed, so check the Seongsanpo tide table at badatime.com first. Roll the time you save into Udo. The Haenyeo Museum is shut that day too, so apply the Gimnyeong swap as well. THE UDO FERRY CANNOT BE BOOKED ONLINE. There is no reservation site — you buy at the Seongsan Port terminal counter on the day. So the risk isn't sold-out tickets, it's cancellation: a high-seas advisory stops every Udo sailing, and in typhoon season (Aug-Sep) boats that ran in the morning can stop by afternoon. Call the Seongsanpo office 064-782-5671 (Udo office 064-783-0448) that morning and cross-check komsa.or.kr for ferry operating status. If it's cancelled, keep Sunrise Peak in the morning and pick one of two afternoons. - The expensive one: Aqua Planet Jeju (daily, 09:30-18:00, ticket desk closes 17:00, 45,500 won adult at the gate — cheaper booked online; 1833-7001). It is NOT next to Sunrise Peak; it's at Seopjikoji. Bus 295 is the only route that serves it and it's infrequent, so a taxi (10-15 min) is the realistic link. Choosing this drops the Udo costs (11,000 ferry + 10,000 bus pass) but adds 45,500 plus roughly 20,000 in taxis both ways, taking the day from 70,000-80,000 won to 110,000-120,000. - The free one: Gwangchigi Beach at low tide, then walk around Seongsanpo. Costs nothing and leaves your afternoon open. GETTING OUT THERE. Two buses from Jeju Bus Terminal. Bus 201 (local): first departure 05:40, every 15-22 minutes, 1,150 won by card / 1,200 cash, 1h50-2h along the coast through Hamdeok, Gimnyeong, Woljeongri and Sehwa. Take the 05:40 — the first bus, not the second. The next one is around 05:58, which lands you at 07:48-07:58 with zero slack before a ferry that only runs every 30 minutes. Express 111 does Seongsan in 1h10-1h20 but runs only 17 times a day at 40-70 minute intervals, 2,000-3,000 won by distance, first departure 06:50 from the airport (Jeju Bus Terminal about ten minutes later). Note that the 111 cuts inland on Beonyeong-ro: it does not stop at Woljeongri, Sehwa or Gimnyeong. It does terminate at Seongsan Port, so if you oversleep you can ride it past the peak straight to the boat. Sunrise Peak hours: 04:30-20:00 May-Aug (tickets to 19:00), 05:00-19:00 Mar-Apr and Sep-Oct (to 18:00), 06:00-18:00 Nov-Feb (to 17:00). 5,000 won adult, 2,500 youth/military. Twenty to thirty minutes of stairs to the top, an hour to eighty minutes round trip. There is no shade and no shop on the climb — in summer buy a bottle of water at the entrance and carry it up. To hold the ferry time, be back down within 80 minutes and walking toward the port by 09:10. ON UDO. It's about a 20-minute walk from the peak's ticket office to the Seongsan Port passenger terminal. Be inside the terminal by 09:30. One walk-up counter has to sell you the ticket, check your ID and hand you the boarding declaration forms (two of them for a round trip), all of it behind a mid-August queue, and boarding closes roughly ten minutes before departure. Aim for the 10:00 boat but treat 10:30 as the working fallback. Ask for the round-trip ticket in one go and fill in both forms on the spot. First boat is 07:00 in the May-August season, sailings every 30 minutes, 15 minutes across. Round trip is 11,000 won for an adult (2026 fare, including the park entrance and terminal fees). - BRING YOUR PASSPORT OR ARC — the physical card, not a photo on your phone; photos get refused and you will be left on the dock. The declaration form is Korean-only: name, date of birth, phone number, ID number. - On the island, buy the 10,000-won circular-bus day pass. It loops eight stops (Haumokdong Port - Seobin Baeksa - Cheonjin Port - Tolkani - Udobong - Geommeolle - Biyangdo - Hagosudong Beach) about every 20 minutes and you hop on and off. The LAST circular bus is 17:20 in summer and 16:00 in winter — over an hour before the last boat, so missing it means walking back across the island. E-bikes need no licence (about 20,000 won); scooters and sidecars do, and some shops won't accept an international driving permit. - Your boat may land at either Cheonjin or Haumokdong. Check which port your return sails from. - The last boat off Udo changes with the season and the sources contradict each other. When you buy your ticket in the morning, ask the clerk for that day's last sailing and write it down — then plan on the boat before it, not the last one. This itinerary assumes you come back on the 13:30. LUNCH. Abalone hot pot (jeonbok ttukbaegi) and abalone porridge places cluster 5-10 minutes' walk from Seongsan Port, 15,000-20,000 won a head. Most take a break 15:00-17:00 with an earlier last order, so be seated by 14:00. Menus are often Korean-only with photos; sea urchin and abalone are market price, so ask before you order. If you're running late, eat on Udo instead — peanut noodles, bomal (sea snail) kalguksu, seafood jjajang. AFTERNOON. Haenyeo Museum: 09:00-18:00, LAST ADMISSION 17:00, closed Mondays, 1,100 won adult / 500 youth / free under 12 (064-782-9898). Only the guided tour needs booking; walk-in entry is fine. Between the 15-20 minute walk back to the Seongsan Ilchulbong Entrance stop and a 15-22 minute headway, realistic arrival is 16:05-16:25 — the 17:00 cutoff absorbs that. If it looks like you'll arrive after 17:00, skip the museum and go straight to Woljeongri. Sehwa beach is two minutes away and Olle trail 21 starts here. At Woljeongri, both the 201 and 101 stop, but the bus stop is 700 m from the beach — a 12-15 minute walk. Don't set your arrival by the clock, set it by that day's sunset: aim to be there an hour before it, which is around 18:15 in late August. Jeju sunset swings from 19:45 in late June to about 17:25 in early December, so look up the day's time and count backwards. Cafes mostly close 19:00-20:00, so order your drink as soon as you sit down. Beach hours are 10:00-19:00 (20:00 on night-opening days). From November to February, drop Woljeongri and head back from Sehwa — with the last Udo circular bus at 16:00 the whole day has already shifted about two hours earlier. THE LAST BUS — the most dangerous part of this day. Two confirmed facts. First, the last 201 toward Jeju Bus Terminal departs Seogwipo Terminal at 19:40. Second, the last express 111 leaves Seongsan Port at 21:30 — but the 111 runs inland, so you cannot catch it at Woljeongri or Sehwa; it only helps if a late ferry has left you still at Seongsan. At Woljeongri there is one rule: get up off the sand at 19:20 and start walking to the stop. Your last safe bus is a 201 between 19:30 and 19:50, which puts you at Jeju Bus Terminal by 20:45-21:05. Treat anything later as nonexistent unless you have personally checked its arrival that day on bus.jeju.go.kr or KakaoMap. The Woljeongri stop is an unlit rural roadside 700 m from the beach with no shop. Google Maps does not do Korean bus directions properly — use KakaoMap or Naver Map. Announcements are in English at big stops but often Korean-only at small ones like Woljeongri and Sehwa, so track yourself on the map, and press the stop button, because the driver will not stop otherwise. NIGHT MARKET, AND GETTING HOME. Dongmun Market's permanent section runs 07:00-21:00 daily; the NIGHT market (Gate 8) runs 19:00-24:00 from May to October and 18:00-24:00 from November to April, with stalls closing early when they sell out. Arriving at 21:00 means the day section is already shutting, so this is a night-market-only stop — omegi-tteok is sold in the day section, so you won't get it on this itinerary; come back in daylight or order it delivered. Terminal to market is 10 minutes by bus, 25-30 on foot. If you leave the market after about 22:30, Jeju City buses thin out fast. Dongmun sits in the middle of the old downtown, so most central accommodation is walkable, and anything else is a short taxi. If you're staying outside Jeju City (Seongsan, Seogwipo), this itinerary doesn't work — cut it at Woljeongri and travel back the other way. MONEY. Five bus rides at about 5,750 won, plus Sunrise Peak 5,000, Udo ferry 11,000, Udo bus pass 10,000, lunch 15,000-20,000, museum 1,100, a cafe 8,000 and the night market 15,000: roughly 70,000-80,000 won. If the ferry is cancelled and you switch to Aqua Planet, budget 110,000-120,000. Transfers are discounted up to twice within 40 minutes of tagging off (free if the next fare is no higher than the one you just paid), but never between buses of the same number. Buy a T-money or Cashbee card at any CU/GS25 and top it up with cash; card fare is 50 won cheaper than cash. Keep 30,000 won in cash — some Udo stalls and night-market stalls don't take cards.
