West Jeju by Rental Car: Aewol Cliffs, Hyeopjae Sand, Saebyeol Sunset

렌터카로 도는 제주 서쪽 하루 — 애월 한담에서 새별오름 일몰까지

Day course · 7 stops · Jeju

Work out when you get the car first, because that sets the whole clock. (A) If you picked it up the day before and slept in Jeju City, leave Jeju City Hall at 08:20 and the timetable below works as written. (B) If you collect it on the morning itself, the desks at the Rental Car House open at 08:00 and the foreigner paperwork — passport, home licence, IDP, a credit card in your own name, insurance choice — takes 30 to 60 minutes, so realistically you pull out at 08:45 and reach Handam at 09:30. In that case walk the deck path one way only (25 minutes) instead of out and back, because the one thing that cannot move is 11:00 at Norabar. Either way, this is a one-day route that costs you two or three days of rental: you collect the evening before and return the next morning. Budgeting one day's rate is wrong. Can you legally drive? An International Driving Permit lets you drive in Korea for one year FROM THE DAY YOU ENTERED THE COUNTRY — the entry stamp in your passport, not the issue date on the permit. Students in their second semester or later are often already past that line, and the rental desk checks. You also need to be 21 or over, to have held your home licence for at least a year, and to hand over the passport, the home licence, the IDP and a credit card in your own name. A Chinese licence will not work at all: China is party to neither the Geneva nor the Vienna convention, so the IDP is not recognised here. For any other nationality, ask the rental company whether they accept your licence before you book, not at the counter. If the Latin spelling of your name differs even slightly across passport, licence, IDP and card, the booking can be voided. Anyone who might take the wheel must be registered as an additional driver before the car leaves the lot — insurance does not cover an unregistered driver. Take the full CDW with a zero deductible; with basic cover you pay the excess in cash on the spot after any scrape, and the amount varies by company and car, so get the figure before you sign. The return, not the last bus, is what constrains this day. Jeju Airport's rental cars sit at a Rental Car House a five-minute shuttle from the terminal, and desks generally close between 19:30 and 20:00 — but on this route you are not off Saebyeol Oreum until about 19:45 in late August. Watching the sunset and returning the car the same night are mutually exclusive, so this day assumes you sleep in Jeju City and return the car the next morning. Confirm your own company's return cut-off and its last shuttle to the terminal when you book. If you must fly out the same evening, cut stops 6 and 7, leave Geumneung at 17:00 and return the car by 18:00; the airport runs 06:00-23:00 and the last Gimpo flights bunch around 21:00, so count back two hours from your departure time. Fuel is full-to-full and Jeju has the most expensive petrol in Korea — fill up in town, not beside the airport. The clock below is a late-August example; the real rule is an offset from sunset. Sunset at Saebyeol Oreum moves from 19:49 on 25 June to 19:13 on 23 August to 18:55 on 6 September — 54 minutes inside the beach season alone — so stop 6 has no fixed time: be parked at Saebyeol Oreum 45 minutes before that day's sunset. The 18:28 below is only what that works out to in late August. The time you leave Geumneung is counted backwards from the same anchor: leave the beach about an hour before sunset. Check the day's actual sunset in your weather app that morning. Stop by stop. 09:00, Handam coastal walk: the 1.2 km deck path takes 50 minutes out and back, then sit at Bomnal Cafe (Aewol-ro 1-gil 25, 0507-1494-4999, 09:00-21:30) from 09:55 to 10:35 and leave at 10:40. 11:00, Norabar (0507-1360-1900) — and note this is not at Handam, it is at Gueom-ri, fifteen minutes back east along the coast road, so there is no promenade to finish next to the restaurant. Weekdays 10:00-17:00, weekends to 17:30, closed 14:00-15:00 for a break, last order 16:30 weekdays and 17:00 weekends, open every day. Octopus ramyeon 15,900 won, seafood ramyeon 11,000 won. They close early when the ingredients run out, and that is the only reason 11:00 matters — join the queue on Catch Table (English app) in advance and time your departure from Handam around it. Leave at 12:00; if they are shut, go to Mungae Hangari Aewol Coast Road (09:30-20:00, break 15:00-17:00). 12:40, Hallim Park (064-796-0001): do not take the coast road, take Route 1132, 40 minutes — the coastal lanes are single-file and crawl at 20 km/h on weekend afternoons because of kerbside cafe parking. Open 08:30; closes 19:00 March-September (last entry 17:30) or 18:00 October-February (last entry 17:00), every day. Adults 12,000 won (teens 8,000, children 7,000); online tickets are often cheaper, so check before you queue. The Hyeopjaegul (200 m) and Ssangyonggul (400 m) lava caves are inside the park, which makes it the most reliable indoor option on the west coast — and if you need more indoors, add Osulloc. 12:40-14:40. 14:45, Hyeopjae Beach, straight across the road from the park gate, mid-afternoon with lifeguards on and the water at its warmest, 14:45-16:15. 16:25, Geumneung Beach, 16:25-18:15: empty while the tour coaches fill Hyeopjae, with Biyangdo straight ahead — but do not wait here for the sunset, you are watching that from the summit, and leaving at 18:15 is what makes stop 6 work. 18:28, meaning 45 minutes before that day's sunset, Saebyeol Oreum (free, no parking fee, 519 m above sea level, about 120 m of climb): five minutes to the trailhead, twenty up the steep western slope, summit at 18:55, eighteen minutes before the sun goes. Start down at 19:15; the eastern side is gentler but longer, 25 to 35 minutes, so you are off at about 19:45. Civil twilight ends roughly 25 minutes after sunset — 19:37 on 23 August — so your last ten minutes are in real darkness. Bring a headtorch; a phone light is not enough. Bring a windproof layer too, the summit is windy even in August. Leave at 19:55. 20:30, Dongmun Market (064-752-3001): the covered market shuts at 21:00, so what you are there for is the Gate 8 night market (19:00-24:00 May-October, 18:00-24:00 November-April). Park at your accommodation and come on foot or by taxi. If you are going to drink at the night market, collect the car in the morning — do not leave it in the market car park overnight. Some stalls are cash only, so carry about 20,000 won in notes. 20:30-22:00. Beaches: Jeju's designated beaches are staffed and open for swimming only from 24 June to 6 September 2026, 10:00-19:00. During the 15 July - 15 August peak, Hyeopjae extends to 21:00 because it is lit; Geumneung does not. Outside the season there are no lifeguards, swimming is banned, and it is a walk on sand. Showers are 3,000 won for adults and 1,500 for children and give you neither towel nor soap, so bring both and bring coins. Parasols and platforms are rented on site with rates posted beach by beach. Korean designated beaches use three flags: white means you may swim, yellow means caution, red means the water is closed — when the red flag is up you do not go in, no exceptions. If a jellyfish stings you, rinse for at least ten minutes with SEAWATER or saline; never tap water, bottled water, vinegar or alcohol, all of which burst the remaining stinging cells and make it worse. Scrape tentacles off with the edge of a card, not your fingers, and tell a lifeguard. If you see a big translucent bell in the water (Nomura's jellyfish), get out. No car? Trunk bus 202 links Jeju City, Aewol, Hallim and Hyeopjae: from Jeju Bus Terminal the first bus is 05:35 and the last is 19:50, and the full run takes 3 hours 14 minutes. The last departure back towards Jeju City from YOUR stop at Hyeopjae or Hallim is not a number anyone can give you in advance — look it up at bus.jeju.go.kr on the morning of your trip. Skip that, sit on Geumneung beach for the sunset, and nothing will come for you. On a bus day, drop stop 6 entirely: the west circular buses run ten times a day and finish at 17:00 (820-1) and 17:30 (820-2), so in the evening it is not a matter of waiting an hour for the next one — there isn't one, and taxis do not come out there. Watch the sun drop behind Biyangdo from the sand at Geumneung instead, then take the bus you checked that morning back into the city for the night market. The same limit applies to Osulloc: 820-1 cannot get you there after 17:00, so treat Osulloc as a wet-weather option for days when you have the car. Seasons rewrite the order. Sunset on Jeju's west coast runs 19:49 in late June, 19:13 in late August, 18:55 in early September and 17:32 in late December. From November to February do not use the timetable above: sunset near 17:30 collides head-on with Hallim Park's 18:00 close and 17:00 last entry. Use this instead — Handam 09:30, Norabar 11:00, Hallim Park 12:20-14:20, an hour on the sand at 14:30 (no swimming), park at Saebyeol Oreum 16:40, summit 17:10, start down 17:35, off the hill by 18:00 with a headtorch (civil twilight ends 17:58 on 22 December), then 35 minutes to Dongmun Market at 18:50, where the winter night market opens at 18:00. If two hours beside a beach you cannot swim at feels wasted, swap the beach block for the Osulloc Tea Museum (064-794-5312, 09:00-18:00 in winter, free, open daily) — 30 minutes from Geumneung and on the way to the oreum, so the route holds. With a car only. Two combinations ruin the day. 9-14 March 2026: the Jeju Fire Festival takes over Saebyeol Oreum and turns the car park and trails into the event site, so drop stop 6 for that week and take the sunset at Geumneung or Gwakji. And a rainy Monday: the wet-weather plan is the two lava caves at Hallim Park, then Osulloc, then the Nexon Museum back in Jeju City — except that museum is closed Mondays (Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00, tickets to 17:30; it was renamed from "Nexon Computer Museum" in May 2026, so an old map pin still points to the right place). Give up on the oreum in rain regardless: wet volcanic scoria is genuinely slippery. In August and September a typhoon makes the summit unstandable and puts the red flag up on the beaches — swap stop 6 for Osulloc and move dinner an hour earlier. Driving practicalities: Google Maps does not do car navigation in Korea. Install Naver Map (it has an English interface) or KakaoNavi before you land; the car's built-in system is often Korean-only. The drink-drive limit is 0.03% BAC and enforcement on Jeju is constant. The dangerous moment on this route is not an afternoon cafe, it is 21:00 at Dongmun Market: if you are drinking there, the car stays at your accommodation and you collect it in the morning. Breakdown and accident numbers are on your rental contract; for help in English, the tourism line 1330 answers 24 hours.
