Sokcho in One Day: Seorak Cable Car, Abai Village, Dakgangjeong
설악 케이블카에서 갯배까지, 속초 당일치기
Day course · 8 stops · Gangwon East Coast
SOKCHO HAS TWO BUS TERMINALS AND THEY ARE 5 KM APART. This is the mistake that ruins the day. Buses from Dong Seoul Terminal (동서울) arrive at Sokcho INTERCITY Terminal (속초시외버스터미널, north end of town); buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal in Gangnam arrive at Sokcho EXPRESS Terminal (속초고속버스터미널, south end, right across a two-lane road from the beach). This course enters in the north and leaves from the south. Going out: Dong Seoul 06:05 arrives 08:17 (21,300 won, 2h12); next useful one is 06:50 arriving 09:10. The 06:30 and 07:30 departures look cheaper (16,700 won) but they are 3h18 milk-runs arriving 09:48 and 10:48 — saving 4,600 won costs you the cable car's short morning queue. Book both legs in advance on the Kobus or TmoneyGO app (English available); on summer weekends and holidays Seoul-Sokcho sells out days ahead. THE LAST BUS, AND WHY YOUR DAY ENDS AT 20:05. If you want the Seoul subway to still be running, the 20:30 from Sokcho Express Terminal (arrives Gangnam 23:43) is realistically your last bus. The 21:00 gets in at 00:13, which is the same minute as the last trains on lines 3, 7 and 9 — one transfer and you are stranded. Later departures (20:45 arriving 23:58, 22:00 arriving 01:13, and the true last at 23:00 arriving 02:13) mean a night bus or a taxi across Seoul. If you finish the evening in the north instead, the last Dong Seoul bus leaves Sokcho Intercity at 21:00 and arrives 23:16, which is the safest option of all — but that means skipping the lagoon and walking 1.3 km from the market to the Intercity Terminal. Terminal phones: Express 033-631-3181, Intercity 1688-3402. That 20:30 is a reserved seat on a bus that sells out days ahead in peak season. Miss it and the seat is gone. So the last leg of this course is a taxi by default, not on foot: leave the lagoon at 20:05, five minutes by taxi, at the terminal by 20:12. Walking takes 20 minutes and is the backup — if you walk, you have to stand up at 19:45. Ten minutes of margin in front of a sold-out bus is not margin. MORNING: ONE DECISION TO MAKE THE MOMENT YOU GET OFF AT 08:17. Only city bus 7-1 serves the Intercity Terminal, and it runs 19 times a day — whatever the posted frequency says, in practice that is one bus every 30-50 minutes. Before you walk out of the terminal, check when the next 7-1 arrives on bis.sokcho.go.kr or Kakao Map. If the next one is 08:35 or later, do not wait — get in a taxi right there. It is 12 km and 20 minutes to Seoraksan Sogongwon. Miss one bus and you reach the ticket office at 09:40-09:50, which destroys the premise the whole day is built on (in line at 09:20, up the mountain at 09:30). Make this a rule before you arrive, not a judgement call on the pavement. THE CABLE CAR CANNOT BE BOOKED. There is no advance reservation and no online ticket — you buy on the day, at the window, round trip only (adult 16,000 won, child 12,000). Full refund until 10 minutes before your boarding time, 20% deducted after that. Hours are not fixed: they are re-posted every morning at the top of sorakcablecar.co.kr, along with a live "operating status" and "waiting time" box. Roughly first car 08:30-09:00, last boarding 17:30-18:00. Strong wind or thick fog stops it without warning, and even when it runs, fog means you see nothing from the top. Call 033-636-4300. When it is down, everything else at Sogongwon is free and starts from the same spot: Yukdam Falls 1h30 round trip, Biryong Falls 2-3h, Heundeulbawi Rock 3h. Your ticket comes with an assigned boarding time — in mid-to-late October foliage season and on weekends, queues form before 09:00 and the assigned slot can be two or three hours out. On those days flip stops 1 and 2: buy the ticket first, then walk to Sinheungsa temple and the big bronze Buddha (10 min from the ticket office) until your slot. On money: national park admission was abolished in 2007, and the temple's cultural-property fee was abolished in May 2023. Different years, both gone. Anyone quoting 3,500 won is quoting the old temple fee from a stale blog. CITY BUSES 7 AND 7-1 ARE THE SPINE — AND ONE STOP DOES NOT EXIST. Both end at Seoraksan Sogongwon and both stop at the market (관광수산시장), Daepohang and the Express Terminal, but only 7-1 serves the Intercity Terminal. Fare 1,700 won cash, 10% cheaper if you tap a T-money card (free transfers within Sokcho for 90 minutes). Combined daytime headway is 17-34 minutes, so budget 10-17 minutes standing at the stop every time you use them — including coming back down from the mountain. Stop announcements are in Korean only, so watch the map on your phone and get off at 설악산소공원 or 설악산주차장, five minutes' walk from the ticket office. The single most important line here: neither route 7 nor 7-1 stops at Expo Park. After 관광수산시장 the stops are 청초생활체육관, then 고속버스터미널. There is no stop called 엑스포 anything. Waiting at the market for a bus to the tower means waiting for an announcement that will never come. Take a taxi — 10 minutes, about 6,000 won on the meter. If you insist on the bus, ride to 청초생활체육관 or 고속버스터미널 and walk from there. Evening is the other trap. Route 7 finishes in the 18:00 hour and the last 7-1 is at 20:30. Do not count on public transport off the mountain after that. This course comes down at 12:20 so it never bites, but if the cable car was closed and you switched the afternoon to Heundeulbawi or Biryong Falls, start walking back down by 15:30 — and if you are later than that, call a taxi (12 km, 20 min) without agonising over it. THE GAETBAE IS NOT A BOAT RIDE, IT IS A JOB. The little ferry to Abai Village is unpowered: passengers grab hooks and haul the barge across on a steel cable. 500 won each way for adults, 300 for elementary schoolchildren, capacity 32, kiosk takes cards, crossing takes 3-5 minutes. Running 05:00-23:00 May-Oct and 05:30-22:30 Nov-Apr. It stops when the waves or wind pick up — call 010-4349-6231. If it is cancelled you walk around by Seorak Bridge, 25 minutes. LUNCH AT 14:05, AND WHAT IS ACTUALLY CLOSED. The 12:30 bus down the mountain is a target, not a timetable: 10-17 minutes waiting plus a 40-50 minute ride puts you at the ferry pier around 13:40, and in a seat at about 14:05. Dancheon Sikdang in Abai Village (08:30-19:00, last order 18:30, no weekly closing day) does the squid sundae for around 16,000 won. Expect it served cool and sliced — that is correct, not a mistake — and expect no English menu; point at the photo of 오징어순대. Nothing on this course closes on a particular weekday. The only recurring closure is the raw-fish floor upstairs at Jungang Market, shut the 2nd Wednesday of every month (merchants' office 033-635-8433); the market itself opens around 08:00 daily. DAKGANGJEONG: ORDER AT 16:40, LEAVE AT 17:20. Manseok Dakgangjeong's Jungang Market branch (중앙로147번길 16) is open 10:00-20:00 daily; boneless 21,000, bone-in 20,000, spicy boneless 22,000, plain fried boneless 19,000. They fry to order, so 20 minutes minimum even when the shop is empty, and over an hour around 19:00 on a weekend. Ordering at 16:40 is how you avoid that hour. If the line is absurd, there are rival dakgangjeong stalls in the same market and the wait, not the taste, is the real difference. Note the listed number 1577-9042 is head office (weekdays 09:00-18:30, closed for lunch 12:00-13:00, closed Sundays), not the shop — no answer on a Sunday does not mean it is shut. You carry it out in a paper bag; the sauce smells strongly, so ask your neighbour before you open it on the express bus. THE EVENING IS SET BY SUNSET, NOT BY THE CLOCK. Learn the rule, not the numbers. - Go up Expo Tower 50 minutes before that day's sunset. Sokcho sunset on 23 August 2026 is 19:09, which is the only reason the schedule says 18:20. By late September sunset is 18:22, so shift the whole evening block 45 minutes earlier. - The lagoon night view only starts once it is actually dark, and it stays light for roughly half an hour after the sun goes down (civil dusk on 23 August is 19:37). Coming down at 19:25 and staying until 20:05 gives you a genuine 25-30 minutes of dark water and lit city. - The hour between leaving the dakgangjeong shop at 17:20 and going up the tower at 18:20 is the only shock absorber in the day. Every delay from earlier gets absorbed here. If nothing went wrong, sit on a bench by the lagoon and eat the chicken — it is the best 40 minutes on the itinerary. Expo Tower (엑스포로 72, phone 033-637-5083) costs 2,500 won for adults, 2,000 teens, 1,500 children, open year-round, but hours differ by day: 11:00-21:00 on weekdays, 09:00-22:00 on weekends and holidays. Call and confirm the day's closing time if you are arriving late. The 73.4 m deck puts the lagoon, Ulsanbawi Rock and the East Sea in one frame. It is also this course's rain shelter, along with the covered market arcade. GETTING BETWEEN THINGS. Sogongwon to the market is 40-50 min on bus 7/7-1 plus 10-17 min waiting for it. Market to Expo Park is 3.5 km: taxi, 10 minutes, about 6,000 won — no bus stops there. Expo Park to the Express Terminal is a 5-minute taxi (Sokcho's meter starts at 4,600 won) with a 20-minute walk as backup. SEASON. This timetable is built for March to September. From October to February sunset falls back towards 17:00, which turns the evening order upside down, and route 7 is finished by the 18:00 hour, which changes how you move at all. A winter version has to be recalculated the same way — do not reuse these times. CASH AND SWIMMING. The ferry kiosk takes cards, but market stalls and some small Abai Village kitchens are cash only. Carry about 30,000 won in notes. Sokcho's four beaches (Sokcho, Deungdae, Oeongchi, Cheongho) were open 3 July to 23 August in 2026, water 09:00-18:00, with Sokcho Beach alone open for night swimming until 21:00 from 21 July to 12 August. Outside those dates you can walk the sand but not swim — and this course reaches the coast in the evening anyway, so in every season it is a sea you look at, not one you swim in.
