Silla in a Day: Grotto, Tombs, and Wolji Pond After Dark

The first trap is the station: Gyeongju Station isn't in the city. Direct buses to Bulguksa are the 711 (10/day — the Jul 2026 reroute may have shifted mid-day times, check 'Gyeongju LIVE BUS' that day) and 700 (4/day). Arrive 08:48 on the 06:33 KTX and the next direct is ~10:21 — either taxi (~30 min, 33-38,000 won), catch the 05:13/05:27 KTX to make the 08:08 bus, or transfer: bus 50/51/70 to the terminal (~20 min), then 10/11 to Bulguksa (35-45 min) — under 2,000 won total and faster than waiting. The Seokguram shuttle (No.12) goes up at :40 and down on the hour (weekdays hourly, weekends half-hourly; noon skips to 12:50/13:05). Season bands: summer 3/1-10/5, shoulder 10/6-10/31 + all of February, winter 11/1-1/31 — last bus UP 17:20/16:40/16:20, last bus DOWN 18:20/17:40/17:20; miss it and you walk the mountain road. After the shuttle it's 3 min to the ticket office plus a 600m unpaved climb (15-30 min) — the ~65-min gap is a tight minimum, not spare time. Both temples open 09:00 sharp (no weekend 08:00), last entry 18:00 Mar-Sep / 17:30 Oct+Feb / 17:00 Nov-Jan; free since 2023; no photos inside the grotto. Note: Bulguksa's main hall starts dismantling repairs in late 2026 — key sights may be under covers; call 054-746-9913. Gyeongju National Museum OPENS Mondays (closed only Jan 1, Seollal, Chuseok; galleries rest the 2nd Monday of Mar & Nov), 10:00-18:00, free; museum to Daereungwon is a 1.7km/25-min walk. Season flips the order: Mar-Oct as listed (Jun-Aug: fill the 18:30-20:00 gap with dinner near Wolji, take the 21:35); Nov-Jan reverse — tombs first (2-3pm), museum 15:45-18:00, then Wolji, out on the 20:13. Wolji 09:00-22:00 (tickets 21:30, 3,000 won); Daereungwon/Cheomseongdae free. Going home: last Seoul-Station KTX 22:38 (00:42); miss it and one Suseo-bound leaves 22:56 — search Suseo. Default to the 21:35 (Seoul 23:49) — but Line 4 southbound (Sadang way) leaves Seoul Station 23:51, tight even then; living south of Sadang, take the 20:13. Buses 711/710 stop at Wolji direct to the station (last passing ~21:40-21:50) but run every 60-70 min — check LIVE BUS or taxi (25 min, 33-38,000 won). Leave Wolji 40 min before your train. The budget is mostly the 98,600-won KTX round trip plus two taxis. From 1 Sep 2026 the KTX-SRT merger revises timetables and cuts fares ~10% — recheck in Korail+.
