The Whole Wall in One Day: Suwon Hwaseong from Seoul

성곽 5.74km 한 바퀴와 행궁, 수원 당일치기

Day course · 6 stops · Gyeonggi-do

THE SHAPE OF THE DAY. These times are wired to each other. 09:30 start at Paldalmun, clockwise: the 20-30 minutes of stone steps up Paldalsan is the only hard stretch of the day, done before the heat. Seojangdae, Hwaseomun, Seobuk Gongsimdon, Janganmun by 11:40. 11:40-12:20 Hwahongmun, Yongyeon pond and Banghwasuryujeong — flat ground, rest your legs, the best photographs on the wall. 12:20-13:00 east wall down past Dongjangdae and Changnyongmun, exiting at the south water gate. 13:00-14:30 lunch in Jidong Market / Chicken Street. 14:45-16:05 Suwon Hwaseong Museum (the 12-minute walk to get there is already built into the schedule). 16:15-17:50 Haenggung Palace. 17:50 leave the palace, walk 10 minutes to the PALDALMUN bus stop, bus 11, at Gwanggyo Lake Park around 19:00. GETTING THERE. Two speeds from Seoul. A KORAIL train (Mugunghwa 2,700-4,800 won / ITX-Saemaeul or ITX-Maum 4,800 / KTX 8,400) does Seoul Station to Suwon in about 30 minutes; first southbound departure 05:54. Buy it in the Korail Talk app or at the counter — it is a reserved seat, not a subway ride. Line 1 takes about an hour and costs around 2,000 won on a T-money card (metro base fare has been 1,550 won since 28 June 2025). On Line 1 the train splits at Guro: board only a train showing Cheonan / Sinchang / Seodongtan / Byeongjeom, or you end up in Incheon. If you live near Gangnam, Sinsa or Yangjae, do NOT backtrack to Seoul Station — ride the Shinbundang Line to Gwanggyo Jungang (about 30 min; Gangnam-Gwanggyo 3,550 won, Sinsa-Gwanggyo 4,250 won, this private line adds a surcharge per section) and take bus 11 to Paldalmun. The course ends at Gwanggyo anyway. From Suwon Station to Paldalmun: Exit 9 for buses 2-2 / 36 / 39 / 400 / 999, or Exit 4 (in front of the Novotel) for buses 11 and 13 — 10-15 minutes either way, 25 minutes on foot. Google Maps does not give transit directions in Korea; install Naver Map or KakaoMap, both have English. THE WALL. 5.74 km, about three hours, free, open 24/7, no ticket gate anywhere. But the wall is genuinely broken at Paldalmun: roughly 304 m between the south water gate, Paldalmun and Paldalsan was demolished in the 1920s to widen the road and never rebuilt — the 184 m stretch running east from the south water gate once carried two artillery bastions, a secret gate and a watchtower. Your map is not wrong; the wall just stops, and you walk through the Paldalmun traffic circle and the Jidong Market alleys to pick it up again. The city is buying land to reconnect it, but the target is 2029, so it will still be broken on the day you go. Paldalmun itself is marooned on a traffic island: use the underpass. At Janganmun and Changnyongmun you cross the road on footbridges. Go clockwise. There is no convenience store between Paldalmun and Hwaseomun (about 1.5 km) — buy water before you climb. Night lighting covers only Hwaseomun-Janganmun-Hwahongmun-Banghwasuryujeong-Dongjangdae; the Paldalsan side is unlit, so check what time the sun sets that day and do not climb it after dark. MONDAY DELETES HALF THIS DAY. Closed Mondays: Suwon Hwaseong Museum, Suwon Museum of Art Haenggung, Art Space Gwanggyo, the Hwaseong Trolley, and the martial-arts demonstration. Open Mondays: Haenggung Palace (09:00-18:00, no closing day), the entire wall, and all nine Nammun markets. Monday fix — drop stop 4 (the museum), spend that time on archery at Yeonmudae and the Haenggungdong craft lanes, and move Haenggung from 16:15 to 15:00. HAENGGUNG. 09:00-18:00, but last admission is 17:00, one full hour before closing — this trips people up, which is why this course goes in at 16:15 rather than cutting it fine. Adult 2,000 won. Ticket office 031-5191-4677 (Suwon Cultural Foundation 031-290-3600). The combined ticket (Haenggung + Hwaseong Museum + Suwon Museum, 4,000 won for an adult) must be bought at the MUSEUM ticket window on this route, because you reach the museum first — buy a single-site ticket there and you will pay again at the palace. The Martial Arts of 24 Skills demonstration runs at Sinpungnu Gate Tue-Sun at 11:00, plus 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Watching is free but you need a palace ticket to get in, and it is cancelled above 33C, below -5C, on heavy fine-dust days, or when rain probability hits 80% — so in July and August assume it may not happen (031-267-1644). WEEKEND VERSION: pull lunch forward to 12:20-13:40, be at Sinpungnu by 13:50 for the 14:00 show, palace 14:00-15:40, museum 15:55-17:25 (in before the 17:00 window closes) — on that day buy the combined ticket at the palace, since the palace comes first. WEEKDAY VERSION: the 11:00 show is inside the palace and needs a paid ticket, so you cannot also do the palace at 16:15 without paying twice. Reorder the whole day instead: 09:20 start at Paldalmun, up Paldalsan and Seojangdae, Hwaseomun by 10:30, ten minutes downhill, into the palace at 10:40 (buy the combined ticket here) for the 11:00 show; out at 12:10, lunch on Chicken Street 12:25-13:45; 13:55 south water gate, Changnyongmun and Yeonmudae (archery is possible after 13:00), Dongjangdae, Banghwasuryujeong and Hwahongmun by 15:20, Janganmun and Seobuk Gongsimdon by 16:00; museum 16:15-17:45; 17:50 bus 11 from Paldalmun to Gwanggyo. Night opening "Dalbit Hwadam" runs 1 May - 1 Nov 2026, Fri/Sat/Sun and public holidays, 18:00-21:30, last entry 21:00 (031-290-3613). On those nights skip Gwanggyo and skip the daytime palace visit entirely: finish the museum at 16:05, eat in Haenggungdong, and go into the palace once, after 18:00, so you pay one admission. From 2 Nov to 30 Apr there is no night opening at all. THE MUSEUM. Suwon Hwaseong Museum 09:00-18:00, but the ticket window shuts at 17:00. Closed Mondays. Adult 2,000 won, free under 13 and over 64. 21 Changnyong-daero, 12 minutes on foot from Paldalmun and 7 from the palace. 031-5191-4242. English panels throughout. Arriving at 14:45 leaves you 80 minutes, then a 7-minute walk to the palace for the 16:15 entry. THE TROLLEY IS NOT TRANSPORT. The Hwaseong Trolley loops out from Yeonmudae and back to Yeonmudae — it does not drop you anywhere useful, and you cannot re-board once you get off. Tue-Sun 09:40-17:00 every 20 min, adult 6,000 won, closed Mondays, cancelled in rain or snow. Yeonmudae booth 031-5191-4686. ARCHERY. Yeonmudae, 09:30-17:30 (to 17:00 Nov-Feb), closed 12:00-13:00 for lunch, sessions every 30 min, 10 arrows for 3,000 won, age 7+. Walking this route you pass Yeonmudae around 12:45 — exactly inside the lunch break. Either do the east side first, before 11:30, or walk back up from the market after 13:00 (20 minutes round trip). Range 031-252-4676. LUNCH, AND WHY YOU NEED CASH. "Nammun Market" is nine markets in one district, open daily, arcade shops 09:00-22:00. On a 100 m stretch of Paldal-ro there are more than ten fried-chicken shops, thirteen at the moment (Jinmi, Yongseong, Maehyang, Nammun). Chicken is sold by the whole bird, not by the piece — one bird feeds two. Expect a 30-40 minute queue between 12:00 and 13:30, which is why this course arrives at 13:00, on the far edge of the peak; order the moment you sit down. Many stalls in Jidong Market have no English menu and no pictures; the sundae (blood sausage) hall is entirely Korean. Card readers exist in most shops but street stalls, rice-cake and fritter vendors are often cash-only, and foreign-issued cards get rejected more often than domestic ones — carry 10,000-20,000 won in cash. Ticket offices at the palace and museum do take foreign cards. BALLOON. Flying Suwon tethered balloon beside Haenggung Square, weekdays 11:00-20:30, weekends and holidays 11:00-21:00, adult 18,000 won. Grounded when wind exceeds about 13 m/s and cancelled the same morning. Check flyingsuwon.com before you leave; if it is grounded, the view from Seojangdae is the substitute. Do not build the day around it. GWANGGYO, AND WHERE BUS 11 ACTUALLY STOPS. Gwanggyo Lake Park is free and never closes; the evening walk is the Woncheon lake side, nearest Gwanggyo Jungang station. Get the bus stop wrong and the end of your day collapses: route 11 (Suwon East Depot to Wonsi Station) has NO stop called "Hwaseong Haenggung". Walk the 10 minutes from the palace to the PALDALMUN stop and board there — that walk is why the schedule leaves at 17:50. Changnyongmun works too. The route runs via Changnyongmun, the back gate of Kyonggi University, Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou University) station and the Suwon Convention Center. Note that "Ajou" here is part of a station name, not the campus — do not navigate by the university. Every 10-20 min on weekdays, 20-30 min at weekends; Paldalmun to Gwanggyo takes 35-45 minutes. The return direction dies first: the last bus 11 out of the Gwanggyo end (Suwon East Depot, 250 Gwanggyo-ho-ro) leaves at 20:40, so after roughly 20:40 there is no bus back toward Paldalmun or Suwon Station. Do not plan to ride out; go home on the Shinbundang Line from Gwanggyo Jungang. And 19:00 is not really the point — sunset is. Mid-August the sun sets at 19:24 and by the end of August at 19:02, so in mid-August you arrive in daylight and have to stay past sunset if you want the lake lit. Dinner at Avenue France beside Gwanggyo Jungang station, generally 11:00-22:00. Art Space Gwanggyo (free, 10:00-18:00, closed Mondays, 031-5191-4195) is already shut by the time you arrive — it is a rainy-morning option, not an evening one. From November to February drop Gwanggyo entirely: eat in Haenggungdong and walk the lit Hwahongmun-Banghwasuryujeong stretch for half an hour instead. And if you are simply out of energy, ending at stop 5 and going home from Suwon Station is a complete day. LAST TRAINS. Decide before dinner. Shinbundang from Gwanggyo Jungang toward Sinsa: last 00:22 weekdays, 23:49 Sat/Sun/holidays (trains starting at Gwanggyo station run 2-3 minutes earlier). Gwanggyo Jungang to Gangnam is about 30 minutes. Near the end of service the terminus varies, so read the destination on the platform sign (Sinsa / Gangnam / Jeongja) before you board. Suwon Station Line 1 northbound: last 23:48 weekdays, 23:34 Sat/holidays — but most late-evening northbound trains terminate at Guro, so if you need Seoul Station, Jongno or Cheongnyangni, leave earlier. Last KORAIL train Suwon to Seoul Station: 23:31, an ITX-Saemaeul arriving 00:02 — you land after midnight with the Seoul subway already finished, so if you need the subway home, leave Suwon by 22:30. The Suin-Bundang Line toward Wangsimni is deliberately not listed here with times: published timetables disagree, so check Naver Map or KakaoMap on the day, and watch the terminus — some late trains stop at Jukjeon instead of running through to Wangsimni. One small mercy since 20 June 2026: on KORAIL-run metro lines (1, 3, 4, Suin-Bundang, Gyeongui-Jungang, Gyeonggang, Seohae) if you exit the wrong station and tap back in at the same station on the same line within 15 minutes, the 1,550 won base fare is waived. EARLY OCTOBER IS A DIFFERENT CITY. The Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival takes over Haenggung and Haenggung Square in early October, and on the day of King Jeongjo's Royal Procession the parade forms up at Changnyongmun, closing roads on the east side of the fortress and rerouting buses — which is precisely the bus 11 corridor (Changnyongmun, Paldalmun) that carries you to stop 6. Dates and programming are announced fresh each year, so if you are going in October, confirm the exact days and the road closures with the Suwon Cultural Foundation (031-290-3600, swcf.or.kr) before you travel. Crowds multiply that week; walk only the western wall (Paldalsan, Seojangdae, Hwaseomun) and hang the afternoon and evening on festival programming instead. SEASONS. July-August: finish the Paldalsan section between 09:00 and 11:00. There is almost no shade on the wall and the stone steps radiate heat. Carry more than a litre of water. Sunset 19:24 in mid-August, 19:02 at month's end, so the Gwanggyo evening still works. Above 33C the martial-arts show is cancelled. November-January: sunset is around 17:20, so it is fully dark when you leave the palace at 17:50 (by mid-February it has moved to about 18:10 — do not reuse the same arithmetic). If the Paldalsan steps ice over, skip Seojangdae: start at Hwaseomun and walk only the flat 3 km (Hwaseomun-Janganmun-Hwahongmun-Banghwasuryujeong-Changnyongmun). No night opening, and the lakeshore wind at Gwanggyo is brutal. Rain: the trolley, the archery, the balloon and the martial-arts show all stop. Rebuild the day indoors — Hwaseong Museum (1.5 h), Suwon Museum of Art Haenggung (free, 10:00-19:00 Mar-Oct, 10:00-18:00 Nov-Feb, closed Mondays, 031-5191-3800) and the covered Paldalmun market arcade — and see only the 500 m of wall around Hwahongmun.
